Somehow they are two in one. They do this together letting us infer that both of them wanted to do what they did. Nevertheless, the next sentence talks about friendship. It seems like this is something meaningful for both of them so since they want to keep it that way, they wont do anything more even though they are tempted. We can infer they are tempted due to the use of because. This lets us see that there is a reason why they wont go further. The closure of the paragraph is a metaphor. It compares their relationship to a diamond and earth, and since they used to be only one, they now have to love each other in some way.
